After seeing people struggle to find a regular everyday western bit to continue their horsemanship journey, Pat decided to go to work designing a bit that combines all of the positive elements of the western bits of the past plus a few innovations of his own. This bit is a loose jawed, high port bit with a curved cheekpiece. The cheekpieces are made out of hand finished steel with an alloy concho. The mouthpiece is made of 1/2” cold rolled steel and a brass cricket just like the one in our Missing Link Snaffle. This will make the transition from the Missing Link Snaffle to Pat’s Western Bit seamless and easy for your horse to understand. The bridle rings are made large enough to accommodate the headstall and the curb strap easily and they are angled out slightly so they don’t dig into the side of your horse’s head. This bit has stainless steel slobber chains which are attached to the bit with lightweight S-hooks which will break if the chains get caught on something. The reins attach to a ring and S-Hook system which puts more signal into the bit when the rider picks up the reins. In addition, this bit has the weight that we like which helps the horse understand how to balance it similar to a ballerina balancing a book on her head!

A few words on cold rolled steel and rust: the mouthpiece is made of cold rolled steel, also known as sweet iron. This type of metal has a sweet taste to horses and helps them to maintain a wet, responsive mouth. The cheekpieces are also made of steel so they will develop a patina of rust over time. If you live in a humid climate, it won’t take much time at all!

Like the Missing Link Snaffle, this bit is built by a real person, not mass produced in Beijing. Pat makes sure each one passes inspection and is a bit he would use on his own horses.
